For SolidBuild sheds in cold climates, most customers use rigid foam board insulation under the floor and over the roof. The thickness you choose is mainly limited by the height of the floor joists and the framing you add to the roof.
Floor insulation:
The supplied floor joists are typically 1-5/8" thick, so you can use foam board insulation up to about 1.5" foam can fit and is a common choice. The insulation sits between the joists, and you can add a plywood subfloor on top for extra firmness and longevity.
Ceiling/roof insulation:
For the roof, you can use the same type of rigid foam board insulation. Many people use 1.5" - 3" thick foam here as well, but you can go thicker if you build a deeper grid above the roof boards. In very cold zones, thicker insulation (2" or more) will help, but the practical limit is how much framing you want to add. If you want maximum warmth, aim for the thickest insulation your framing allows.
1" insulation will help, but in cold winter zones, most people go with 1.5" or 2" for better results. The thicker the insulation, the better the thermal performance, especially for the floor, where cold can seep up from below.
