The operable windows on the California are tilt and turn, so the handle has three positions. Pointing down locks the window. Turned sideways, level with the floor, it swings open inward like a door. Turned all the way up, it tilts in from the top. If yours only tilt, the handle is most likely going past the sideways position to the top one.
Close the window fully first, then turn the handle to sideways and pull the sash toward you. Always change the handle position with the window shut, because turning it while the sash is partly open can catch the mechanism. If that happens, push the window firmly closed, turn the handle down to lock it, then go back to sideways.
If it still won't swing open with the handle sideways, send a short video to info@solidbuildwood.com or call (800) 590-2508, ext. 1, and our team will help you sort it out.
